Sam Hornish Jr. sets two new IRL records

July 29, 2003 – Defending and two-time IRL IndyCar Series champion Sam Hornish Jr. has added two new records to his already being the youngest IRL champion in history.  That of most laps led in IRL IndyCar Series history, and having led more than 100 laps in more races than any other driver.

Hornish led 126 laps at the Firestone Indy 400 at Michigan International Speedway July 27, 2003 to break the all-time laps-led record of 1,515 held by Tony Stewart, ending the race with 1,587 career laps led in IRL IndyCar racing.

Hornish also has led more than 100 laps in seven different races, more than any other driver in series history.

Hornish put on an impressive display of driving by leading 12 times for 126 laps in his #4 Pennzoil Panther Racing car equipped with the new Gen IV Chevy Indy V-8 engine, but eventually lost the race to Alex Barron when exiting Turn 4 on the final lap Barron moved around Hornish on the outside and beat him across the finish line by .0121 of a second, the fourth-closest finish in IRL IndyCar Series history.

Hornish has been involved in six of the top 10 closest finishes in series history, and the Michigan event was only the second time he has finished second rather than taking the checkered flag.

HPC supplies coating services for many parts on the #4 car including HiPerCoat Extreme™ for the exhaust system and S-Series dry film lubricants for many of the drivetrain components.
