Sam Hornish Jr. Wins 2001 Indy Racing Northern Light Series Championship
Chicago, IL 09/02/01 - Sam Hornish Jr., the 22-year old racing phenom clinched the Northern Lights Indy Racing League championship at the Delphi Indy 300 in Chicago on September 2nd. Driving the #4 Pennzoil/Panther Racing/HPC Indy Car Sam placed a close second to Jaques Lazier's first place finish giving Hornish enough points to win the 2001 championship.
Sam's season was incredible for just his second year in Indy cars. In 2001 Sam had 10 Top 5 finishes in 12 races, winning two and leading 650 laps, tying Tony Stewart's single-season league record. The next event is the Chevy 500 on September 16, where Sam may break the record.
